Who's excited?!<br />
<br />
Today's edition is Power Pix. Power Pix are kind of like word wall words. They are core concept vocabulary words your students need to master. You attach a definition, a gesture, and an image to the word. You hang the words up somewhere in your room and review them often. I'll show you what we've been doing in our class so far.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlhfXZK6DPSjvzA-d7NisyMQpIHkypS0h14bz2ffORA81J854ipI4xpSTwg4GySmj2tgNTvnNxW3OArrcC11Rm9CjEnUINWXgNiQ7us912jVo0g2s5QffpSb-4K8FsHB584bw8xcXRnUY/s1600/IMG_0492.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlhfXZK6DPSjvzA-d7NisyMQpIHkypS0h14bz2ffORA81J854ipI4xpSTwg4GySmj2tgNTvnNxW3OArrcC11Rm9CjEnUINWXgNiQ7us912jVo0g2s5QffpSb-4K8FsHB584bw8xcXRnUY/s320/IMG_0492.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I created all of mine in a Word document. I find the words the students need to master. These words come from various sources - our standards, our math curriculum, grade level created curriculum, etc. I teach the five step lesson plan that goes with the core concept words. (You can read my post about five step lesson plans <a href="http://keepcalmbecausefifthgraderocks.blogspot.com/2013/08/standard-form-five-step-lesson-plan.html">here</a>.) When the students have mastered the concept, the Power Pix goes up on the wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I taught Chemical Change. I taught them a chemical change is an unexpected change in temperature, state, or color. I had them orally repeat after me several times, I had them teach their neighbors, and I had them write the definition in their science notebooks. They say the definition with gestures. I used the ASL sign for "change," I look incredulous when I say, "unexpected," and I count off on my fingers the three unexpected things. Adding gestures activates the students' motor cortexes. This part of the brain, when activated, helps to store information into long term memory. Of course we review all of our Power Pix A LOT! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most of my Power Pix will come from math, so I've started collecting them on my biggest cupboards.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi97NF7VWUQFGAPpdoWLi3VlFbD9iZbC_fNMecpqTrsg3-u_yEGq2vpERA8bS3dYPXPVm1pjgFbxuGHEnbzPYlvB40Y-q39PQKyaCFI9NNUpRVfWAcYxoG7VD3ddw80isxLgfSZvkXXCU4/s1600/IMG_0490.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi97NF7VWUQFGAPpdoWLi3VlFbD9iZbC_fNMecpqTrsg3-u_yEGq2vpERA8bS3dYPXPVm1pjgFbxuGHEnbzPYlvB40Y-q39PQKyaCFI9NNUpRVfWAcYxoG7VD3ddw80isxLgfSZvkXXCU4/s320/IMG_0490.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a close up.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are our science terms so far. I didn't do a five step lesson with the states of matter. Instead, I read a book about matter and change that introduced the states of matter. As we went through the book, we created gestures and examples for each state. We show with our hands what the molecules look like at each stage, we say the definition with gestures, and we give an example with an example popper. I liked introducing the states of matter during our reading time because it helped build their background knowledge before we started doing the experiments and we integrated curriculum. Score! Although, now as I type this, I may go back and do a Yes/No Way, QT, and some critical thinking with the states of matter. It won't hurt them!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLS666KjfyMT3ym9QGiTcevCIXA9fIZYCImhc1tsPehslQnNNm8Q0rbn3rAGhTwU6m2ui2h22VxtiC7Ao0SQikMfMtER1xJXNTOYLeYSxynVbePW_lsYttJBIwvV5ntNRIfqmoqfjX3I/s1600/IMG_0493.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLS666KjfyMT3ym9QGiTcevCIXA9fIZYCImhc1tsPehslQnNNm8Q0rbn3rAGhTwU6m2ui2h22VxtiC7Ao0SQikMfMtER1xJXNTOYLeYSxynVbePW_lsYttJBIwvV5ntNRIfqmoqfjX3I/s320/IMG_0493.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the ELA Power Pix we've done so far. Today I taught visualization in reading and paragraphs in writing. When we're done with those mini-units, I'll add those Power Pix. The five step lesson plans can be expanded over many days as the "explain" portion can take quite some time!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1SX5nuGqHirej7cxk1MKDVAPxlFL-OI8NUKmIM122TdVj3gGRU3rWh-j-D-F9ZGSQGwM1nU26s8fEw9W90P4CcNmyHAr-aYecB52MfSdpuTDbWAdXe8kOiCnpjWaSnHZKce0ZGgo3xlQ/s1600/IMG_0497.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1SX5nuGqHirej7cxk1MKDVAPxlFL-OI8NUKmIM122TdVj3gGRU3rWh-j-D-F9ZGSQGwM1nU26s8fEw9W90P4CcNmyHAr-aYecB52MfSdpuTDbWAdXe8kOiCnpjWaSnHZKce0ZGgo3xlQ/s320/IMG_0497.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put the current math words for each unit up on the board until we take the test. That way, I remember to review all of the terms at the end of each lesson. More practice!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6yehLdl3sGflmvDpGgJTTslC1DA4Xq_2LkzedH56OLJ45hkRyuo0zVomIGKEJNFQagbTf0MsjIy0RUgD5Hzd5-zfoeS-MqO3GnihYgdjPgi3p12OfSGjpFQ2LNhBkvJB0feNlFRIB_Jg/s1600/IMG_0500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6yehLdl3sGflmvDpGgJTTslC1DA4Xq_2LkzedH56OLJ45hkRyuo0zVomIGKEJNFQagbTf0MsjIy0RUgD5Hzd5-zfoeS-MqO3GnihYgdjPgi3p12OfSGjpFQ2LNhBkvJB0feNlFRIB_Jg/s320/IMG_0500.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the two comprehension strategies we've done so far.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxhw_6nKWrIfgO7f4u3kFEWc0MSMBrHSkYZW7kz5h8DrDJouk-QAi3n0AmXc2Vz7Z4jOiDiYYK6vAWeHY0yyEpBVG3iDfKY1duJs_39er07wI2Lo1jlkUV5PcAz8UU7u51VyBQ_XF07b0/s1600/IMG_0501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxhw_6nKWrIfgO7f4u3kFEWc0MSMBrHSkYZW7kz5h8DrDJouk-QAi3n0AmXc2Vz7Z4jOiDiYYK6vAWeHY0yyEpBVG3iDfKY1duJs_39er07wI2Lo1jlkUV5PcAz8UU7u51VyBQ_XF07b0/s320/IMG_0501.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And these are our writing Power Pix so far.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am loving the review. At the end of today, we ended up with 10 minutes to fill. So what did we do? We reviewed Power Pix! I loved it, and the kids get more shots at remembering the material. It's a great sponge activity. "Review the two types of changes we see in matter with your partner, and give two examples of each with an example popper and a because clapper!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, there you have it! Questions? Comments? Leave them below. Thanks so much!</div>

Have you seen those handprint American flags? I can't remember where or when I first saw them, but I've been wanting to make one for a while now. I thought it would be a great activity for September 11.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got some white butcher paper, drew some outlines for the stars and stripes, and then had the students paint and stamp their hands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's not perfect, but we did manage to get 13 stripes on there!</div>

Last year I tried using the clip chart that is famous on Pinterest. I've seen it in a lot of classrooms in my district. It wasn't for me. I liked certain aspects, but not others. I liked that I could recognize students for their achievements, but it got to be a hassle to ask someone to move their clip up. It disrupted the flow of the lesson. I don't know. I just didn't like it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I'm using the Super Improvers Team from <a href="http://www.wholebrainteaching.com/index.php/blog/Chris-Biffle.html?fontstyle=f-smaller">Whole Brain Teaching</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrJV2-dEORufEpT5OBv3JqlBidBUV4etfP5OXSeh2dPeuOAzPnm-XnMPC5r4gWrxFxFl_XRMwap_wsZPerXb95hez0h4awpYP_FY6lIAMJirP9TKJqckKg64YIr6wAIHaMbaMxa4irzBc/s1600/IMG_0374.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrJV2-dEORufEpT5OBv3JqlBidBUV4etfP5OXSeh2dPeuOAzPnm-XnMPC5r4gWrxFxFl_XRMwap_wsZPerXb95hez0h4awpYP_FY6lIAMJirP9TKJqckKg64YIr6wAIHaMbaMxa4irzBc/s320/IMG_0374.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To set it up, get 10 different colored sheets of paper. Create different levels. I went with a sports theme since it was in the book, and also the name of the system has "team" in it. Other themes could be related to science terms, colors, be creative! I just used the paper that was available in the office. I used left over name plates for each level. Then you cut paper for each student that matches the color of the first level. The book says to use a half sheet and put the students' names on the paper. I used a quarter sheet and put their student numbers on the paper. This is what it looked like before school started.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1cOkeZvFqh3vllDbNU8X3KeJqYzzxsBGVn9LODqYw4mmLPc-zERBkQrMjy2BowRYCZtE9vMHylYXgZIYoD55G2TEnP3rNxzNFvh60w_6-x_npCWNs0VL7m3XhQhMXdfZxYQTxEyKY-g/s1600/IMG_0484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1cOkeZvFqh3vllDbNU8X3KeJqYzzxsBGVn9LODqYw4mmLPc-zERBkQrMjy2BowRYCZtE9vMHylYXgZIYoD55G2TEnP3rNxzNFvh60w_6-x_npCWNs0VL7m3XhQhMXdfZxYQTxEyKY-g/s320/IMG_0484.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what it looked like last week. I've added the rest of my WBT cards. You can see some stars on student's cards already. For each academic and behavioral improvement, I put a star on that student's card. When they get 10 stars, they move up to the next level. One of my students has nine stars. When she reaches 10, I'll take down her card, write a quick note home about how she's improving at school on the back of the card, and put up the new color for the next level. I've awarded stars for improvements in keeping shoes on, Rocket Math improvements, tidier desks, whatever!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I check their notebooks, I write notes to them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When they make an improvement, I stick a star inside. Then they put the star on their card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

So far, I am loving the SIT. The kids are liking it, too. You can only go up, I control the star distribution, and the kids look for ways to improve.</div>

I knew this would happen! As soon as the school year started I would be so exhausted that it would be 10 years between each post. Okay, maybe not 10 years. It has been 10 days, though...<br />
<br />
Today's will be short and sweet. This is an idea I found on Pinterest. The pin came from <a href="http://itsstoreytime.blogspot.com/">It's Storey Time</a>. I haven't spent time at her blog, but this post was so fun I had to try it myself.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made this at the end of last school year. It started as a bare bones tree. I had my students dip their thumb or finger in paint and write their name next to it. Last year's color was pink. This year I chose green. Next year....? Yellow, maybe. I did it on the first day of school. I put the school's name before "Family Tree," but I didn't include it in this picture for confidentiality. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I feel like this post was really difficult, and I only have one thing in it! :( This year will get easier. I just need to keep telling myself this....</div>

I then print one out a week to do a rough sketch of my weekly plans. Have a great Sunday every one!<br />

And I am so thankful for a three day weekend. The first full week was exhausting for me and the kiddos. Whew! I know we'll soon find a rhythm, but I'm thankful for a little time to recuperate.<br />
<br />
I went into school for just a bit today. I didn't use my time effectively yesterday. <cough, cough> Fridays are half days for the kids. My team had a meeting, and then I felt so tired after the long week. I didn't want to do anything. I did talk with the other gal on my team about classroom management stuff, so technically I was still working, but I didn't get anything planned for next week. So I went in today.<br />
<br />
I made up a weekly schedule. Now that we know when our specials are and everything, I was able to think about how I wanted our days to look. I also did some year long mapping, did a projection of how I thought September will look, and did a more detailed plan for next week. Let me show you how I did all of this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUfo_UE-jos_Zuy0zPJuXBIcKCcXKkyJJeNcundiM5Y5j9jtbFBcbrw2BJvQ-Pl1G-Q12J3kq9APw2gObEeZfAd0_LBbz07YUwNiVrzvjL37r0CDG1MehbPQAx0B7kXjjOJ9QbrANDtFg/s1600/IMG_0469.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUfo_UE-jos_Zuy0zPJuXBIcKCcXKkyJJeNcundiM5Y5j9jtbFBcbrw2BJvQ-Pl1G-Q12J3kq9APw2gObEeZfAd0_LBbz07YUwNiVrzvjL37r0CDG1MehbPQAx0B7kXjjOJ9QbrANDtFg/s320/IMG_0469.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first made up year long maps. These are rough outlines. I didn't think to take a picture. Sorry! Basically I went month by month for each core subject (math, reading, writing, science) and wrote what I wanted to teach on. Next, I mapped out September. This is where I am using my sticky note planner. I love this thing. When I need to change plans around, I can lift the sticky and move it somewhere else! It's generic and gives me a good idea of pacing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisMyaHQGN8cERlaRDn3mHN5SclsIV2T1H5sx8yA5k3WKN47KyGcvbaT7-1emKiL_4yQ-DMBh0HGerpjAjHgONa-pYaOuFw9JTT3AYIPqJt-uTWn9s8LUazqbpOwNDhbzhb1Lk7dnh23mg/s1600/IMG_0470.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisMyaHQGN8cERlaRDn3mHN5SclsIV2T1H5sx8yA5k3WKN47KyGcvbaT7-1emKiL_4yQ-DMBh0HGerpjAjHgONa-pYaOuFw9JTT3AYIPqJt-uTWn9s8LUazqbpOwNDhbzhb1Lk7dnh23mg/s320/IMG_0470.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the computer I made a weekly schedule. I sent a copy to my principal and my coach so they know when they can come in to observe. I print one off each week, write brief notes for the specifics of the week. This may seem a bit excessive, but I like having a quick guide I can glance at. The sticky notes give me big picture ideas, and this gives more clarity.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZ8bvyb0REu_BODc31rfQv7V34X34sGMCOZoxF4Si4r_92wsXvAfZhWTzzJuZ_2TGahvyeTXV2PRG9rd4F4dEGT-GSwaOob-ldDeMsCmxRRGjI-nmYM4b-baw9ubAbj3xtR2Jy4mSfYY/s1600/IMG_0474.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZ8bvyb0REu_BODc31rfQv7V34X34sGMCOZoxF4Si4r_92wsXvAfZhWTzzJuZ_2TGahvyeTXV2PRG9rd4F4dEGT-GSwaOob-ldDeMsCmxRRGjI-nmYM4b-baw9ubAbj3xtR2Jy4mSfYY/s320/IMG_0474.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I stick that schedule into my yellow lesson plan binder.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29A96cIPp37dCgzGXs-59nbxVlT8-E-FGtOjcYrctQLJAjM3Pot1XGHGFwrSovNS44iHE1vUb42zl-V-ebP5HNo0ovD5N3KHg4iVGosDmPhIGNC8Y60vNRsfcmE_PZAaY-5KaSd6g5tY/s1600/IMG_0471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29A96cIPp37dCgzGXs-59nbxVlT8-E-FGtOjcYrctQLJAjM3Pot1XGHGFwrSovNS44iHE1vUb42zl-V-ebP5HNo0ovD5N3KHg4iVGosDmPhIGNC8Y60vNRsfcmE_PZAaY-5KaSd6g5tY/s320/IMG_0471.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I keep a class list, seating chart, and a pencil pouch at the front. If I ever have to be absent for an unexpected reason, the sub can look at this and figure something out. I do need to put together my sub folder soon. I'll do a post on that when I get there. :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5dPX7mAnriwSXt2QrqKR_wbMgQAGkFGRtzhxp9Njk9LX8jvNbZ_RU6q2pOi6bASnYS-HunW45vCipFJR6mK4XQogOCfYYuNjPBq6ZKQaVCtR6GLf6hZ-yPnFjqpGII5U3zoX_xrXph20/s1600/IMG_0472.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5dPX7mAnriwSXt2QrqKR_wbMgQAGkFGRtzhxp9Njk9LX8jvNbZ_RU6q2pOi6bASnYS-HunW45vCipFJR6mK4XQogOCfYYuNjPBq6ZKQaVCtR6GLf6hZ-yPnFjqpGII5U3zoX_xrXph20/s320/IMG_0472.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because the first few days are weird and crazy, I didn't do my schedule like the previous schedule. I actually scripted out my first three days. This picture shows day one. Then for last week, I typed up a different schedule for each day. It was very helpful. I also made notes to myself about what went well and what I need to change next time.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzrrI9U-XqYfe-l7mDNU9kYO8x5cM8BaC3xa7hbh9mnca1M0A0X5fgZ2N2RcuEH8D0ToA1qwAbEEW8vOnxdVnwnmHhThLIYtr3mceUUy4jGIibU8-ajrjbcP8wQ8u8Y3mqg5vIaoErU0/s1600/IMG_0473.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzrrI9U-XqYfe-l7mDNU9kYO8x5cM8BaC3xa7hbh9mnca1M0A0X5fgZ2N2RcuEH8D0ToA1qwAbEEW8vOnxdVnwnmHhThLIYtr3mceUUy4jGIibU8-ajrjbcP8wQ8u8Y3mqg5vIaoErU0/s320/IMG_0473.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My lesson plan binder also has tabs for my core subjects. This is where I keep my lesson plans that I type up. I don't type out everything, but when I do I stick it in it's appropriate place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's it! Have a great weekend!</div>

You can now exhale.<br />
<br />
Sorry for not posting sooner, BTW. First week of school exhaustion has kept me away from here. I hope to quickly become acclimated to the new year.<br />
<br />
I got this idea when I was teaching in Washington. The gal I team taught with got this idea from someone she used to teach with. So here we go!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHtqq-cwpmAo8fGhEV29oCFbZSu5uRa4mfhiFl73sTbHrK050-vDTj4lw4r2Qci3f3glwIIPllz-JnuJNn1j5wV5a8qcmnL4bgckcYbiO6jI5C1EzHLQWNtKHmI-omwCiIhyOfmUo0yJg/s1600/IMG_0456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHtqq-cwpmAo8fGhEV29oCFbZSu5uRa4mfhiFl73sTbHrK050-vDTj4lw4r2Qci3f3glwIIPllz-JnuJNn1j5wV5a8qcmnL4bgckcYbiO6jI5C1EzHLQWNtKHmI-omwCiIhyOfmUo0yJg/s320/IMG_0456.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every day, the students walk in and get started on the Number of the Day on their whiteboards. It gets the class working quickly and quietly on a meaningful task while I do attendance, house keeping, etc.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I taught them how to do NOTD, I wrote each step on a piece of chart paper and explained it as we went through examples. This is how they did NOTD all last year.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I have added steps five and six, word and expanded form. (Sorry the pic is so blurry.) I just added this piece today, so I will teach it tomorrow, although we just went through the math lesson yesterday and today. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All ready for tomorrow!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for reading. Please ask questions or make comments. How could I improve?</div>

I have been keeping my vitamin C intake up because I don't want to get sick!<br />
<br />
Today was the first day of school. Hoorah! I am glad it's over. The day just flew by for the kids, but it was sooooooooo long for me. I hate the first few days really. I don't know the kids or the class dynamics, they don't know the routines, and I have to do a lot of practice with the simple procedures. It's just a pain, but we have to put in the effort now so we can fly through the rest of the year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHTGSgpvi1XD8zHWballL6_vVpS6FI7AlGEMqJa1sc9k1d7aH_IRcWwE3INFw5xBrKtUNa9QagbVa3ZlIG1ctCRJo8t6rPVJnZtqpXyx9bkO7YF4bnvpMwhApLCRcTeh8Qe30Qu2G0yoQ/s1600/IMG_0443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHTGSgpvi1XD8zHWballL6_vVpS6FI7AlGEMqJa1sc9k1d7aH_IRcWwE3INFw5xBrKtUNa9QagbVa3ZlIG1ctCRJo8t6rPVJnZtqpXyx9bkO7YF4bnvpMwhApLCRcTeh8Qe30Qu2G0yoQ/s320/IMG_0443.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what I had on the board as the students came in. I played soft, gentle music like I always do in the mornings. Most kids didn't read the directions, but I had something to point to when they had a question. "I don't know where to put my back pack." "Let's read what number four says again."</div>

These were on their desks as they came in. The name tags have the students' names on them. I also put a whiteboard marker on there. Whiteboards and math texts went in their desks. They didn't need anything else today. The questionnaire was something simple to do so I can get to know the students.</div>

Alright. This tired teacher is going to bed. I need to wake up early to prep for tomorrow. I couldn't stay after school today, so I get to wake up before the butt crack of dawn. Good night!</div>

It's time. Tomorrow is the first day of school, so this is the best my classroom will look all year. I'm going to start with before photos, and then I will show you pictures from just an hour ago. Enjoy! And please appreciate the hard work it took to pull this thing off. It was so much more difficult cleaning and organizing the room than I ever thought, but well worth it.<br />

Thanks for looking! Going to do a few more things before I rest up. I'm going to write out name tags and labels for student whiteboard markers. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight. So excited!</div>

(I was born in Mississippi, so it's okay for me to say that.) I'm trying out something new this year. In a previous post, I mentioned <a href="http://littlelovelyleaders.blogspot.ch/2012/08/classroom-complete.html">Little Lovely Leaders</a>' idea for handling paper distribution. She has baskets on each groups' bookshelf. She puts the paper that the students need for the day in the baskets, and then the table leaders hand them out when the teacher directs them to. I'm so excited to try this out! Here's what my group shelves look like after today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiVKMQMh0WxGZkgYxywp5EeZ0PfPaF3XUXEFvFuG2tSL2RpFHw0vQMu3jJFXQDiNGFBkYK7VJx5wx1mw04Xe_n9ZuYMEdST49-OYJzdNjeHMswDcnBtqwqOhFwi1kgGT3XIrBrKH9KFYk/s1600/IMG_0427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiVKMQMh0WxGZkgYxywp5EeZ0PfPaF3XUXEFvFuG2tSL2RpFHw0vQMu3jJFXQDiNGFBkYK7VJx5wx1mw04Xe_n9ZuYMEdST49-OYJzdNjeHMswDcnBtqwqOhFwi1kgGT3XIrBrKH9KFYk/s320/IMG_0427.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were so many textbooks left in my room. Most of them we use, but not every day. So I put the books on the shelves. I didn't want a bunch of stuff cluttering up their desks. (They have enough junk as it is.) There is a plastic shoebox container on the middle shelf with glue, scissors, coloring implements, etc. The caddy has tissues, Germ-X, and the table leader's badge.</div>

I don't quite know how to feel about it. I am nervous, and sad, and excited, and scared, and overwhelmed all at once. There is still so much to do, but there is always so much to do. Even though I have been intentionally staying away from school these last two weeks as much as possible, I have still been doing work at home.<br />
<br />
The work I have been doing is mainly reading various educational books. If you've been reading my blog, you know I have been doing the <a href="http://wbtbookclub.blogspot.com/">Whole Brain Teaching Book Club</a> this summer. It has been extremely beneficial, and I highly recommend it. One of the key points I pulled away from this book is that students learn more when we talk less, not the other way around!<br />
<br />
At my school, we have to do Professional Growth Plans every year, so this year mine will be micro lecturing. Micro lecturing is the instructor teaching in short 30-60 second bursts, and then allowing the children to teach what they just heard the instructor say to their partner(s). All the while, the teacher and the students use gestures. Gestures, micro lectures, and teaching opportunities for the students activate several parts of the brain, which gives the concepts a better chance of being stored in long term memory.<br />
<br />
I tell you, this is going to be a challenge for me. I love to talk. However, I have personally witnessed the validity of teaching in short bursts. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XroJtR9gQc8&list=PLEAAA21F137F969CE">Here</a> is a great example of micro lecturing.<br />
<br />
These next few days I also want to write out and script my first few days of lessons using the WBT Five Step Lesson Plan. The steps break down a lesson by starting with a question. You ask the class a key, core concept question like, "What is a chemical change?" The students would then turn to their partners and ask the question of their partners. Already they have retaught the question and objective of the lesson. They know that today they will be focusing on answering the question.<br />
<br />
The next step is to answer the question. The teacher gives a definition of chemical change. She also uses gestures to involve the motor cortex of the students' brains. Involving that part of the brain helps to transfer knowledge to long term memory. "A chemical change is an unexpected (use a gesture for unexpected, like a look of shock with hands on your cheeks) change in color (grab one finger to show the first type of change), temperature (grab two fingers to show the second type of change), or state (grab three fingers to show the third type of change.)" The teacher repeats the definition with gestures. The teacher has the students mirror her gestures and/or her words and gestures. The students then teach each other the definition with gestures.<br />
<br />
The third step is to give lots of examples of chemical change for students. When I do this, we will probably do several experiments to show chemical change. I would talk about each reaction, explain how I knew it was a chemical change by referring back to our definition, and then have the students teach each other.<br />
<br />
The fourth step is assessment. First the teacher does the "Yes, No way!" She asks the students a series of yes/no questions about chemical change. If the answer is yes, the students shout, "Yes!" while pumping there arm in the air. If the answer is no, the students shout, "No way!" while putting there fingers to their foreheads and pushing them out. When 90% of the class answers these yes/no questions correctly, the teacher moves onto the Quick Test. If less than 90% of the class answered the questions correctly, the teacher goes back to step three and reteaches with more examples.<br />
<br />
To do the Quick Test, the teacher has the students put their heads down with their eyes closed. She then poses true/false statements about chemical change. If the statement is true, the students put a thumbs up. If the statement is false, the students put thumbs down. The teacher monitors the student answers.<br />
<br />
The final step is critical thinking. This step usually involves writing. While the students who answered the Quick Test questions correctly write about chemical change, the teacher can pull aside the small group who is still struggling, and she helps them through sentence frames and thought processes about chemical change.<br />
<br />
The teacher also posts a Power Pix of the lesson onto the wall. I'll talk about Power Pix later.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuuBtwMyB4w">Here </a>is a fabulous demonstration of the Five Step Lesson Plan.<br />
<br />
I have already created one for one of our first math lessons. I will post it for you tomorrow. Any questions?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every year before the start of school I read Harry Wong's <i>The First Days of School</i>. Those first days are crucial in setting the tone for the year. They really are. I enjoy reading his book because it sets my mind on track for those first crazy days. He reminds me how to be a professional, and I love it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In his book he says, "An effective teacher always has the procedure or schedule posted or ready for distribution when the students arrive. " He also says, "Your first priority is not to take roll; it is to get the students to work immediately." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

On the first day, I will have a different morning procedure posted on the board. With all the supplies and hullaballoo of the first day, plus the fact that I have not taught them their morning work yet, I have different things planned for that first day. I will, however, train them in our morning procedure, we will practice it both the right and wrong way, and the second day they will be able to complete all the components (except for the homework folders because I am not introducing those until the third or so week.) I will explain the Number of the Day in a later post. Also, I hate pencil sharpeners with a passion. After the first day, they are only allowed to use the pencil sharpener during the first ten minutes of the day. They have to have three pencils inside their desks. If they lose or break them, they can borrow from a neighbor because they have three. I have used this system for two years now, AND I LOVE IT. (I'm not a pencil sharpener nazi, there are always exceptions, but I don't tell the kids that.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I moved classrooms my birthday poster mysteriously disappeared....So I had to make a new one. This was easy and FREE!! I got the months from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Birthday-Posters-775924">That's So Second Grade</a> on Teachers Pay Teachers. I love that site. I wish I was creative enough to come up with ideas to sell there. Maybe one day, but until then I will reap the benefits and ideas of other great teachers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will play the Birthday Line Up game on the first day. (The students have to line up according to birth date without talking.) I will write their names and the date on the corresponding month, and then the poster will just hang on our closet door. It's so cute! Love it!!</div>

And finally, I saw these lamps at a home decorating store called Real Deals. I don't particularly like cowboys and bison, but these were so great, and so cheap. I just had to have them. I paid $10 a piece for them. They go well with our westward expansion unit. Adorbs!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There you have it, folks. I had to go to school today for a literacy meeting, and I am wiped out! I do not have the stamina for the first week yet, but ready or not here they come!</div>

It was a consuming task, but one I am grateful is completed. I'll show you how I added my own flavor to it. :)<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2sVacRd1Rd82MffiaCeU8KoK3b5zPKvin9fFwP4KDxrN4SP8nrwvu_d3aUdkBIOGh4PLQzMQPaOv97fIJog8_OHlYZTI5oqf3demX6PzwAiVuAM14mbw7cBDDxyXQ4Q3ckfyKNzyCXNk/s1600/IMG_0378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2sVacRd1Rd82MffiaCeU8KoK3b5zPKvin9fFwP4KDxrN4SP8nrwvu_d3aUdkBIOGh4PLQzMQPaOv97fIJog8_OHlYZTI5oqf3demX6PzwAiVuAM14mbw7cBDDxyXQ4Q3ckfyKNzyCXNk/s320/IMG_0378.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first started by making a list of everything that I wanted to be labeled. I went around the room with a notepad and made a list for big labels and small labels. Then I went home, typed them up, and printed them out. The big labels are name tags, and the little labels are file folder stickers. I found these goodies in a $2 clearance cart at Office Depot. Score!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuvx7llWUPfu9jExJUYF7f5T1QqB2495dcKTb1MynQfyzc8gEwdc0r5oaX1tz7vwWeyCG61LttXlg3Rx1z_EwhR11yXHm-0QhRgDg5EM_beht84R6vDrYN4dQKe_Rr-TBBCE8z5k4rC0g/s1600/IMG_0377.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuvx7llWUPfu9jExJUYF7f5T1QqB2495dcKTb1MynQfyzc8gEwdc0r5oaX1tz7vwWeyCG61LttXlg3Rx1z_EwhR11yXHm-0QhRgDg5EM_beht84R6vDrYN4dQKe_Rr-TBBCE8z5k4rC0g/s320/IMG_0377.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For some of the big labels, I wanted to jazz them up for my rainbow theme.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfYMxgzajzapOi_TGXSdnskpUIh_SobJwDnsQJO10_HP22TBV6qIjl_3RvhhoysEvl4Ati8bPvMtWsB0CiH9ofmkPfJHroYjYfqBNqeQN2V2tUepMNS2K_KQtv75t4QrXDlU9XYSePg_I/s1600/IMG_0379.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfYMxgzajzapOi_TGXSdnskpUIh_SobJwDnsQJO10_HP22TBV6qIjl_3RvhhoysEvl4Ati8bPvMtWsB0CiH9ofmkPfJHroYjYfqBNqeQN2V2tUepMNS2K_KQtv75t4QrXDlU9XYSePg_I/s320/IMG_0379.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I stuck them to paint chips.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoe3MSialzBt06cYn_bd_kHoUiIGIGKLIeU7QTkUbE0s3EnyQi9J9eMYTqz2qz5zEIlVcOU4sqDYaz_ItXlTY5KqBiID_hAe-AhJdDPXqG1WuzIEoU4Fi1zMlE51ZHGsJP1Zr1uNUcvOQ/s1600/IMG_0387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoe3MSialzBt06cYn_bd_kHoUiIGIGKLIeU7QTkUbE0s3EnyQi9J9eMYTqz2qz5zEIlVcOU4sqDYaz_ItXlTY5KqBiID_hAe-AhJdDPXqG1WuzIEoU4Fi1zMlE51ZHGsJP1Zr1uNUcvOQ/s320/IMG_0387.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then I used packaging tape to secure them to various surfaces.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWlYG5KDkCgqX2MbSvT4L3SlkGnrS4yweroQv2sVMKJcXVR5TSLchJcIWey3N8tF8_E6ZAJcbsGVWJi5FsPY9SiMdKW1JFVOTm3ESiBjNuq0kjx6AUIYZgND00RtGLFagx974FBwNeC1o/s1600/IMG_0388.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWlYG5KDkCgqX2MbSvT4L3SlkGnrS4yweroQv2sVMKJcXVR5TSLchJcIWey3N8tF8_E6ZAJcbsGVWJi5FsPY9SiMdKW1JFVOTm3ESiBjNuq0kjx6AUIYZgND00RtGLFagx974FBwNeC1o/s320/IMG_0388.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That counter won't always be so cluttered. Right now it is holding supplies for the first couple of days of school.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLk_OBU2QMgvOesNLzBhmjP1vbpjIWNPxNNKTk1br9wn2gsfvFBs96BPYwCj-nx-yT-PwTsxrEv-LfWPlRIshRo9YU2OiJO2Kx13s5E1pJBkk1KJT54XQGysDdbHG_nmv6YyDm9QJeJ6M/s1600/IMG_0385.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLk_OBU2QMgvOesNLzBhmjP1vbpjIWNPxNNKTk1br9wn2gsfvFBs96BPYwCj-nx-yT-PwTsxrEv-LfWPlRIshRo9YU2OiJO2Kx13s5E1pJBkk1KJT54XQGysDdbHG_nmv6YyDm9QJeJ6M/s320/IMG_0385.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes the paint chips were too big, so I just peeled the name tag off and stuck it directly to the surface.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbKM457HWMUNlNN58ZbDn8hh9AsRTlABYaoz51QumtnnWCG5M1g53QNYGrRzPwBb9tbbipDdiNoBSrYmw9HiCHTdArbfhFe3As2Go1K5m4OvW_ykyGoTp-dcEzrUZEyn_2_g6cjC1lNeY/s1600/IMG_0390.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbKM457HWMUNlNN58ZbDn8hh9AsRTlABYaoz51QumtnnWCG5M1g53QNYGrRzPwBb9tbbipDdiNoBSrYmw9HiCHTdArbfhFe3As2Go1K5m4OvW_ykyGoTp-dcEzrUZEyn_2_g6cjC1lNeY/s320/IMG_0390.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, I didn't use paint chips for things that will be behind closed doors.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPwfbAaYkCr7p6TAI1wo9XHAGVvft7Fi6hw8lXEHn-pDk-5Wf97PTjLLaq0EnKE9oOrKgM2W-Sx4msZyGolKwpF4aQPKK-qjTCcgjxkA5KlQph-DAZTvUzeNSeyrPVn1gUxEnYR4eR4FY/s1600/IMG_0391.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPwfbAaYkCr7p6TAI1wo9XHAGVvft7Fi6hw8lXEHn-pDk-5Wf97PTjLLaq0EnKE9oOrKgM2W-Sx4msZyGolKwpF4aQPKK-qjTCcgjxkA5KlQph-DAZTvUzeNSeyrPVn1gUxEnYR4eR4FY/s320/IMG_0391.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a combo of paint chip tags and just peeling directly onto the surface.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are name tags for the math manipulatives on the right. I used three for each of those plastic shoe box containers. One label went on the lid, one on the outside, and one on the actual space it needs to return to.</div>

That's it. It was a lot of work, but I am glad I took the time to do it. Thanks for reading!</div>

Today's post is quick and simple. Let's get to it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS1iWdb76XMW0QfazJ9ReiXzIH8HZnZzScpSHKTYf3yyapyeiIYjmv6IwOm_D0tTKxWOMRBYs4Eg9yuKCdR6AspmkJ0nikjyg5rGehFsQq7iBtwjqtAkwKKE4LC_AbqHHNfXob61zrBvM/s1600/IMG_0410.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS1iWdb76XMW0QfazJ9ReiXzIH8HZnZzScpSHKTYf3yyapyeiIYjmv6IwOm_D0tTKxWOMRBYs4Eg9yuKCdR6AspmkJ0nikjyg5rGehFsQq7iBtwjqtAkwKKE4LC_AbqHHNfXob61zrBvM/s320/IMG_0410.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I only have one picture. Sorry! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Go to Wal Mart, Ace, Home Depot, where ever, and stuff some free paint chips into your purse or bag. Leave the store feeling guilty even though you have done nothing wrong. (The second half of the first step is optional.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Cut some white construction paper in half hamburger style. (Construction paper is provided at our school.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Glue the paint chips onto the edge of the white construction paper halves. The ones from Wal Mart fit perfectly. The Ace ones are a bit larger.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Laminate!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Cut the laminated name plates out of the excess lamination.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Fold the name plates in half so they will stand like a tent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Wait until the very last possible moment before the first day of school to write the students' names down because not everybody has come to register and you're still not certain who will and who won't show up the first day and SURPRISE you'll probably get new ones the first couple of weeks anyway. So, make like 50 of them. Just kidding, but seriously....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to have them stand on their desks for the first couple of days while we get to know each other, and then I will put them in the sub folder if the sub wants to use them. I don't want to put name plates on their desks this year with contact paper because the students pick at them, they look gross the last few months of school, and I want to try having kids move their stuff when we switch seats instead of moving their entire desk. Thanks for reading! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
P.S. I've been making a lot of progress with the <a href="http://wbtbookclub.blogspot.com/">WBT Book Club</a>. I can't wait to share with you about how I hope it will function in my room this year! </div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17665833723133165946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483401690846756069.post-83391540903416429362013-08-06T15:30:00.000-07:002013-08-06T15:30:16.356-07:00Simple Desk OrganizerAt our school, the teacher desks are built into the walls. It's a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because it stays out of the way, but bad because I can never sit at it due to the fact that my back is facing the class. However, this also turns into a good thing because it keeps me away from my desk. Instead of using the computer for attendance, for example, I use my iPad. That way I can take attendance while I walk around to make sure everyone is working on The Number of the Day. (Once the school year starts, I will share this with you.)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I moved classrooms this year, and I had to sort through an immense amount of office supplies. I wanted a way to organize them in the drawers so they weren't all sprawled all over the place. I found this idea on Pinterest...<br />
<br />
Too many of my sentences start with, "I saw this thing on Pinterest..." It's from <a href="http://www.thestonybrookhouse.com/2012/03/messy-desk.html">The Stony Brook House</a>. Much like most of my repurposed ideas, the original is much better. Head on over for the great tutorial on her site. I'll just give you a brief drive by of how I used her idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_Cr6J0Oh0Au5JBz47_dwO0sWDBsUwII6eYRwW-1j5KA8OmJ9ePGhSq-bIjYIh30nDqvJFp84ghfbBEsOIpXG7OcesT4-m0YqLSWUBNKe4OLFeMb5ksu8cADugdbPFs4EsF2K2GWRhQM/s1600/IMG_0370.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_Cr6J0Oh0Au5JBz47_dwO0sWDBsUwII6eYRwW-1j5KA8OmJ9ePGhSq-bIjYIh30nDqvJFp84ghfbBEsOIpXG7OcesT4-m0YqLSWUBNKe4OLFeMb5ksu8cADugdbPFs4EsF2K2GWRhQM/s320/IMG_0370.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, I spent a couple of weeks collecting various cardboard boxes. I even went dumpster diving for a few. Don't judge. They were clean and on top.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnA5_y-z9LN_wIFHsnmu4gs_bRFtw5bVgwWbhIQILV42i2gAwqyCLPG8BrV-k7VOVxtazitqeVbtEbeH9aj-9MvjgMt94g3_MTsc1n1wKqbh5vG0hZm0lM4zqv1DPjsenXCgnB3RWFzG4/s1600/IMG_0371.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnA5_y-z9LN_wIFHsnmu4gs_bRFtw5bVgwWbhIQILV42i2gAwqyCLPG8BrV-k7VOVxtazitqeVbtEbeH9aj-9MvjgMt94g3_MTsc1n1wKqbh5vG0hZm0lM4zqv1DPjsenXCgnB3RWFzG4/s320/IMG_0371.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I measured the depth of the drawer and used a ruler and a sharpie to draw a cutting line. Then I cut the box with an x-acto knife.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtiEg0b__DIICji9KvEvf6nsZ7kaQFiumhQgBO37hY9_YM0YqQzLLpJZ8n2G647jK2p8ZUwVOi5WUCJRifnGoN6nbAMo0R6fQlwsDV1zfnYoC7q2vQ8_ygcQS3-WimFJ-0rKwxcvOaOcA/s1600/IMG_0401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtiEg0b__DIICji9KvEvf6nsZ7kaQFiumhQgBO37hY9_YM0YqQzLLpJZ8n2G647jK2p8ZUwVOi5WUCJRifnGoN6nbAMo0R6fQlwsDV1zfnYoC7q2vQ8_ygcQS3-WimFJ-0rKwxcvOaOcA/s320/IMG_0401.jpg" width="250" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then sorted all the junk in the drawer into each cardboard box. I was going to cover the boxes with some cute wrapping paper I bought from the dollar store like she did in her tutorial. By the time I was done sorting all the stupid little office supplies and cutting the boxes, I had this attitude about the wrapping paper:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mle.mymiddleearth.com/files/2013/07/aint-nobody-got-time-for-that.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://mle.mymiddleearth.com/files/2013/07/aint-nobody-got-time-for-that.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still want to secure them together with the pretty wrapping paper, but for now they are hidden in my drawers and nobody will see them except for me. And snooping kids. And probably a sub or two. That project won't get done for a couple of months, let's be honest.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvPPiNfzpC3Uhkb2oiWRhvAvT6xtDPKRwwyuTFOx3VJFHB2qMjT8HRbiccLrPAUoGZZANlweFQ8yCMpFMY104WHorv33VAXAVyxgCQ5u7hnp8_3mTTYy67FF_KpKYj45GMb5jk2anUTuI/s1600/IMG_0400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvPPiNfzpC3Uhkb2oiWRhvAvT6xtDPKRwwyuTFOx3VJFHB2qMjT8HRbiccLrPAUoGZZANlweFQ8yCMpFMY104WHorv33VAXAVyxgCQ5u7hnp8_3mTTYy67FF_KpKYj45GMb5jk2anUTuI/s320/IMG_0400.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the drawers, and each one is labeled according to what is inside. Would you like to see the labels and what is in each drawer? Please let me know, and I will put them up for you. Thanks for reading!</div>

I followed her steps, used the same materials, and did everything almost exactly the same. I only tweaked a few things to make it match my schedule. This is not my idea!! I just want to make that very clear.<br />
<br />
It's been hard finding a plan book that I like. I've made my own, purchased a few, bought some planning apps on my iPad. So far I haven't been happy with anything. After lots of research and months of consideration, I decided to give this a try. I love DIY, and I love Post-Its. This seemed like the perfect thing to try!<br />
<br />
I won't go through this exactly because The Wise & Witty Teacher has already done so on her blog. Please head on over to her site and see what she's done. She has marvelous ideas!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpoD6h3K2dgSD9iWHG6SUtqkn6ZX26f7X6bP9LB98Hox32s9Nnl1GkXHajiK3aD1rMOwOlPiYqZa-e_5ucPrCf8YcQA-X9Bq9lY0tgHvE8kh8j9QLXLhX9zDIfoYINjAecbUmA29oZEts/s1600/IMG_0412.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpoD6h3K2dgSD9iWHG6SUtqkn6ZX26f7X6bP9LB98Hox32s9Nnl1GkXHajiK3aD1rMOwOlPiYqZa-e_5ucPrCf8YcQA-X9Bq9lY0tgHvE8kh8j9QLXLhX9zDIfoYINjAecbUmA29oZEts/s320/IMG_0412.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I assembled my materials. I purchased that plastic pocket folder to carry the plan book, but now I'm not so sure it will work. I may need to do some tweaking. No worries, though. It's such a nice pocket folder that it will definitely find another use.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrUZx7SjrB74FmyJshuBxB8X10PCoFDmd_hn7Ao-cuwIjoHpagowBC2M6vXqSt58bKGIMFs_MJea9Z2NT8ByMyu8ZCMyu0pnHmiF1uhOrllNCY6r8mzEGioEllRU3KyWL1aGlR3OvZ08o/s1600/IMG_0413.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrUZx7SjrB74FmyJshuBxB8X10PCoFDmd_hn7Ao-cuwIjoHpagowBC2M6vXqSt58bKGIMFs_MJea9Z2NT8ByMyu8ZCMyu0pnHmiF1uhOrllNCY6r8mzEGioEllRU3KyWL1aGlR3OvZ08o/s320/IMG_0413.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I considered the subjects I wanted stickies for, played with the arrangement, and then I drew the lines.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbFReXdI_VPDlNtMZxXNk-_7gfWZgcJuBeEsLa4TEcp2SlVZUh037XxIsAF5UzG044BqEZWSw3r6tgan699lqPtzLLFPCgKaNUlFsMDAStU-9mnF_WdpwdvjQPT2AgLi4H171f0bo_qTk/s1600/IMG_0414.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbFReXdI_VPDlNtMZxXNk-_7gfWZgcJuBeEsLa4TEcp2SlVZUh037XxIsAF5UzG044BqEZWSw3r6tgan699lqPtzLLFPCgKaNUlFsMDAStU-9mnF_WdpwdvjQPT2AgLi4H171f0bo_qTk/s320/IMG_0414.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I labeled the days of the week and the subjects.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwlPW0Iyolsvkxp8ADr6vb0h2bhYkxnJs4D2KQ_agnzbJ_QDRwmGvo3yXjs7pI6CRDVI2F4C6K8ciNcypxlelmmaiiX9mndgcnwPX7VjrEHAnSnwmMtZ_bdJtVl5_uxFsus5CjcIZOZ2w/s1600/IMG_0415.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwlPW0Iyolsvkxp8ADr6vb0h2bhYkxnJs4D2KQ_agnzbJ_QDRwmGvo3yXjs7pI6CRDVI2F4C6K8ciNcypxlelmmaiiX9mndgcnwPX7VjrEHAnSnwmMtZ_bdJtVl5_uxFsus5CjcIZOZ2w/s320/IMG_0415.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I placed my stickies! I brightened the color on this picture. This layout works well because Fridays are always half days. Also, I want to make sure I always get to reading and math on Fridays, but we don't have time for both writing AND science. Depending on the Friday, we will do either or. I changed the color to show Friday will always be different for that subject slot.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzxl4UxDMum3xCvr87sXp2Gjzn1qmdVLHX5hftEsJ4JZJQ-9nwgy39cmsfUSxXsEzLc952SfMcrFolBdzxATyvnHQCxmaEASDPkxaDK2W6fLaRzzSjnIjm2EAlSWWYeygGCpVQKZNUXdw/s1600/IMG_0417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzxl4UxDMum3xCvr87sXp2Gjzn1qmdVLHX5hftEsJ4JZJQ-9nwgy39cmsfUSxXsEzLc952SfMcrFolBdzxATyvnHQCxmaEASDPkxaDK2W6fLaRzzSjnIjm2EAlSWWYeygGCpVQKZNUXdw/s320/IMG_0417.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I tabbed the weeks.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlOi8a4I4z-AvW2zJJHd5ilcExlpe7-rmcZUnq5EVrmmZZLcEhSc6V79Bw6q4Uk3BwHCdR8uOxmrvnBmULfCNxzv4EJ8FX3n9oWWKA90iVYMKTWLvbf9BTtTUmi93t5luH_u0PQsDJsXM/s1600/IMG_0418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlOi8a4I4z-AvW2zJJHd5ilcExlpe7-rmcZUnq5EVrmmZZLcEhSc6V79Bw6q4Uk3BwHCdR8uOxmrvnBmULfCNxzv4EJ8FX3n9oWWKA90iVYMKTWLvbf9BTtTUmi93t5luH_u0PQsDJsXM/s320/IMG_0418.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have no idea what our daily schedule will look like, and I probably won't set it in stone for at least a couple of weeks after the start of school. I'm ready for when my schedule is ready! I placed these stickies on the front inside cover.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've already started planning our first day! I need to meet with my team to get a better idea of what the first week will look like. We have placement probes to administer, bench mark tests, etc.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This took the better part of a day, but it was nice mindless work. I enjoyed listening to various forms of entertainment as I put this thing together. I hope this works out. It looks so pretty! Thanks for reading!</div>

Let's take a peek!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZRFXWXYMuvlI5sp-9ks0CHzWiFS8asFL3s24QEUtGLQHxqTRYiK6SnCmQ59x0TPzVQq-KOXIlY_jR4dLjXbSdkdHkVScRtjLRvTVRwSZRs1g-UP7NGIi94VxcmsQAksGhAvuGZ1asKNA/s1600/IMG_0382.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZRFXWXYMuvlI5sp-9ks0CHzWiFS8asFL3s24QEUtGLQHxqTRYiK6SnCmQ59x0TPzVQq-KOXIlY_jR4dLjXbSdkdHkVScRtjLRvTVRwSZRs1g-UP7NGIi94VxcmsQAksGhAvuGZ1asKNA/s320/IMG_0382.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of the books are labeled by genre with a sticker on the inside cover. The label matches the genre label on each bucket. I don't know if you want to know exactly how I sorted, which genres I used, and the labels I made. If yes, just let me know, and I'll do it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiql0TQ60HnA4FptOm6c3L9hQqSd7RwkHQ3t2PAkoPz57zmFqGNkeXLcrIaYzIanBElkTDAe1ZBqLG6DabWIhu3h14ARy3-Xc4Sq9aiDKVdxU15lqJUzgIogB5gTdrf91T_SsAVSGXKBvU/s1600/IMG_0383.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiql0TQ60HnA4FptOm6c3L9hQqSd7RwkHQ3t2PAkoPz57zmFqGNkeXLcrIaYzIanBElkTDAe1ZBqLG6DabWIhu3h14ARy3-Xc4Sq9aiDKVdxU15lqJUzgIogB5gTdrf91T_SsAVSGXKBvU/s320/IMG_0383.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The reasons I used these buckets were that they were available, cheap (Dollar Tree), and thin. Do you see the wacky clothespins underneath the clock? (I should have taken a better picture. I was too tired!) I number my students, so each number on that chart has three clothespins. They can check out three books at a time from the library. They pick the book, put their clip on the bucket, and take the book back to their desk. When they are finished, they return it to the bucket, they get their clothespin (which having it attached to the bucket they got it from should help ensure it makes it back to the proper place), and browse for another selection. The green basket is the hospital for lost or broken books. My classroom librarian will then be able to sort books and help repair them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4iDZFFRZSXw8uXMoetn4GFwYhnmOw7Px5er0JjwY1mddhdf1YCJO9riH4QhGKjpf81l_fNXLHYFaVedajMrpjBBVHs4RGNj9VMzyY39pNTBitA9YbSuI2k07NBNRnUrip5w-sD-GOv7A/s1600/IMG_0393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4iDZFFRZSXw8uXMoetn4GFwYhnmOw7Px5er0JjwY1mddhdf1YCJO9riH4QhGKjpf81l_fNXLHYFaVedajMrpjBBVHs4RGNj9VMzyY39pNTBitA9YbSuI2k07NBNRnUrip5w-sD-GOv7A/s320/IMG_0393.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have books that do not live in the library because they are special in some way. Books that are frequently referenced, only put out for certain science or social studies themes, books we've made, books we have shared together during read aloud, those books go in these baskets. They are way too thick for clothespins.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh00WQ-uOYdvVgTR_UqmyBAb0qGuEZ5v4rzaYpSo1z_W_M-kqT6jdysSuNaGJL9a73YJ815mjJ8-X6F1ffHMK6c2BFAzCtS6NNH45AgjLEH9UG23_qjcklzS03SIh8aGfbc2FEyis2bubM/s1600/IMG_0394.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh00WQ-uOYdvVgTR_UqmyBAb0qGuEZ5v4rzaYpSo1z_W_M-kqT6jdysSuNaGJL9a73YJ815mjJ8-X6F1ffHMK6c2BFAzCtS6NNH45AgjLEH9UG23_qjcklzS03SIh8aGfbc2FEyis2bubM/s320/IMG_0394.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I labeled pieces of poster board, laminated them, and stuck them in the baskets.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkcWnSkFSt6EW1wAL3j7qc3aABZw9RPrGF3DdsXmBrM96XVe3Y4D8UC7mu-OiylPEEaoMBHuEXEG0GGEZ0L3hEdPpQvH9dGGWRiMTzJpZkml36Loz2_q0lw9p0lDDOOL5yNfpLDMpPqc/s1600/IMG_0395.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkcWnSkFSt6EW1wAL3j7qc3aABZw9RPrGF3DdsXmBrM96XVe3Y4D8UC7mu-OiylPEEaoMBHuEXEG0GGEZ0L3hEdPpQvH9dGGWRiMTzJpZkml36Loz2_q0lw9p0lDDOOL5yNfpLDMpPqc/s320/IMG_0395.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now the baskets are labeled, and the students can put their clothespins onto the poster board.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3PMyaiukuwRQWnU_BwBfwJGJViOHn8vdChJhDftmJqB7Uyt2wtWi9nR_6L2GDHBbZ4OWL2Azj0euDeCcqyif5qqcwRHcAquWzsSE2Afc3czAEWgWtMHxd940pzgjjMfSoOe2MnMO6mvc/s1600/IMG_0396.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3PMyaiukuwRQWnU_BwBfwJGJViOHn8vdChJhDftmJqB7Uyt2wtWi9nR_6L2GDHBbZ4OWL2Azj0euDeCcqyif5qqcwRHcAquWzsSE2Afc3czAEWgWtMHxd940pzgjjMfSoOe2MnMO6mvc/s320/IMG_0396.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got the clothespin idea from <a href="http://anocdteacher.blogspot.com/2012/08/classroom-library.html">An O.C.D. Teacher</a>, though her chart looks much nicer. The poster board idea was my own. I'm not saying other people haven't done it, but I haven't seen it anywhere, and it *may* be an original thought of my own. I say that because I might have seen it somewhere, stored it away, and my mind re-birthed it as my own thought. I do have original thoughts sometimes, though. I'd like to think this was one of those times.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, I haven't been posting because I was spending exhaustingly long days in my room. The reason I did so was because I didn't want to have to go in at all this week. I met my goal, and now I intend to relax at home, work on my WBT book study, read for fun, and watch silly movies. I took a ton of pictures, so I do plan on posting this week, too. Stay tuned!</div>

We all like those type of blog posts best anyway, right? Of course right. (Wow! Two musical references in one post already. Only the oober musical theatre nerds will get them.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifpd_SwOgolB52M5rAFGVHxWk2OvbtdQ64jdJiF-DvXELJIfBCCOOyh4ey9mg6vWgwgBF3DmDftv1FCxBGHL2SAqzj0SxjZKlTv9olU3ueH2LCPT2AeeAt7wIZlF3XCgsZ2wj3V3vTEYM/s1600/IMG_0372.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifpd_SwOgolB52M5rAFGVHxWk2OvbtdQ64jdJiF-DvXELJIfBCCOOyh4ey9mg6vWgwgBF3DmDftv1FCxBGHL2SAqzj0SxjZKlTv9olU3ueH2LCPT2AeeAt7wIZlF3XCgsZ2wj3V3vTEYM/s320/IMG_0372.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my Learning Targets pocket chart. I got the idea from <a href="http://www.theorganizedclassroomblog.com/index.php/blog/8-ways-to-display-learning-objectives">The Organized Classroom Blog</a>. Last year I had my objectives on the whiteboard, but not in the pocket chart. This year, they will still be clearly visible, I can still easily refer to them, but they are not going to take up so much space! I need to redo the Science one. It doesn't make sense.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG4IOG3iLccJrJr5inAOaGLtx4xYHqC7Fqkn0-gQUdf8eBZ33-oyK9DlV03akTInloBTb0nq803pmMdCMGBUYK-nKfrLPjh5uyZysW1gJKT1oUXeaTEX0hFbUgWgYWStjGS7fLrX7D17M/s1600/IMG_0373.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG4IOG3iLccJrJr5inAOaGLtx4xYHqC7Fqkn0-gQUdf8eBZ33-oyK9DlV03akTInloBTb0nq803pmMdCMGBUYK-nKfrLPjh5uyZysW1gJKT1oUXeaTEX0hFbUgWgYWStjGS7fLrX7D17M/s320/IMG_0373.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next to the objectives I put together a little landscape. This is for our Social Studies units. In fifth grade we cover American history from its beginnings to present. My plan is to start off by asking the students what they think the land looked like before people lived on it. My guess is they will add trees and animals. Then we will create Native American settlements, a Colonial town, a town going through the Revolution, the Civil War, etc. I will take pictures for each unit, and we can watch how the landscape, people, and buildings change over time. I need to add border to this board, and then it will be done. I purchased some more of the bubble rainbow border, and it should arrive next week. In keeping with my rainbow theme, I wanted to keep the borders the same inside the classroom to give it a more unified feel.</div>

Whole Brain Teaching! This is the Super Improvers Team, the Five Rules, and the pocket chart for my daily schedule.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every Student gets a card to hold stickers for improvement in academics and behavior. When they get ten stickers, they move up to the next color level. I'm excited to give this a go. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got so much accomplished today! I also had a great meeting with my team about literacy. I am excited for this upcoming year. Every day I get a little more done and a little more excited to see those cute faces. </div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17665833723133165946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483401690846756069.post-48929183851959480052013-07-30T08:17:00.000-07:002013-07-30T08:17:44.550-07:00Crayon ArtOkay, so we've all seen the plethora of melted crayon art on Pinterest, right? Right. Well, I thought I'd take a whack at it and put something together for my classroom because it works so well with my theme, and it seemed simple enough. I won't take you through all the steps because there are other blogs with better tutorial descriptions. I didn't follow any of those; I just kinda did my own thing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRnV1KhCHmT-dxAlkrMGnOVFzEcKPUfw-DBx0YiqzcQ1hSBneJ721bz3pLmTU_5rHONJCm4A2P_4jOyoQG_hJ7I0WIr3wWT43rUY36kndSz6bQhVzr0Fv1RsYn8IYHh9eKgSJf64KXBig/s1600/IMG_0364.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRnV1KhCHmT-dxAlkrMGnOVFzEcKPUfw-DBx0YiqzcQ1hSBneJ721bz3pLmTU_5rHONJCm4A2P_4jOyoQG_hJ7I0WIr3wWT43rUY36kndSz6bQhVzr0Fv1RsYn8IYHh9eKgSJf64KXBig/s320/IMG_0364.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started by drawing a light pencil outline of a heart on the edge of the canvas. I sorted the crayons the way I wanted, and then I used a hot glue gun to glue them into place. I ended up using two packs of the 24 count crayons.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL9pj03RRjvsBfwsRnaxxuQg2hlnxh-gf_enG4Cn4al2PAZn-X5bpWH5mCnSqVk_aVFeyJ7yQPSG5jbkMb57MsHloClR-29eWXThLOx3GSeXRpPZsnsQey5AFw6vF8c1wTPviIRVGZWtI/s1600/IMG_0365.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL9pj03RRjvsBfwsRnaxxuQg2hlnxh-gf_enG4Cn4al2PAZn-X5bpWH5mCnSqVk_aVFeyJ7yQPSG5jbkMb57MsHloClR-29eWXThLOx3GSeXRpPZsnsQey5AFw6vF8c1wTPviIRVGZWtI/s320/IMG_0365.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had the brilliant idea to put the canvas in a box to collect the crayon runoff. Otherwise the balcony would have been decorated as well. I used a hair dryer to melt the suckers. I used a combination of hair dryer position as well as holding and tipping the canvas to get the colors to flow in the direction I wanted to. One crayon came off, so I had to heat up the glue gun again to stick her back into place.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirq1Bio1tYWefKdotCIAN9osCgQXaq5KqQxNuI-p410HblxebpZWhbRhPHvxhZGyxj94NYNZi9xUUR3w5qlrbSlUA6Cj4gDYi8JX55eADp68sf8Jt9prYkrzDRWs6zXI03DGNgTqqmIT4/s1600/IMG_0366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirq1Bio1tYWefKdotCIAN9osCgQXaq5KqQxNuI-p410HblxebpZWhbRhPHvxhZGyxj94NYNZi9xUUR3w5qlrbSlUA6Cj4gDYi8JX55eADp68sf8Jt9prYkrzDRWs6zXI03DGNgTqqmIT4/s320/IMG_0366.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tada!</div>

It turned out better than I expected! I'm so excited. Okay! Off to go shopping for more supplies and then back to school for some more organization. Toodles!</div>

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. I have been very busy working on putting everything in my classroom away. It's been more tiring than I anticipated, but the good news is I only have my filing cabinet and desk drawers left to organize! I also need to have a day where I label every darn thing in my room. This will help me and the students stay more organized. Then I will be able to do fun things like decorating and lesson planning. :) A gal on my team had a great writing idea for the first week of school. I can't wait to share it with you!<br />
<br />
I just wanted to show you how much stuff I was able to get for less than $40. You heard me right. Less than $40!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvyB6kC8QvL-ToxwwcTkPcys7svSqt2n1IOjVwPmSmKHf3UuNEx_g5Em4qMsL-4k54sjNWSSzkX0S8DszkXe30YZaqli2L1k3CUsmzgq9oYD-zUcY0Ev89y-MmUin50H99POCdMSS8stk/s1600/IMG_0362.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvyB6kC8QvL-ToxwwcTkPcys7svSqt2n1IOjVwPmSmKHf3UuNEx_g5Em4qMsL-4k54sjNWSSzkX0S8DszkXe30YZaqli2L1k3CUsmzgq9oYD-zUcY0Ev89y-MmUin50H99POCdMSS8stk/s320/IMG_0362.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the haul breakdown: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
30 composition notebooks (50 cents each at Wal Mart)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
30 pocket folders, with prongs (15 cents each at Wal Mart)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6 baskets (Dollar Tree)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
10 plastic shoebox containers with lids (Dollar Tree)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The composition notebooks will be for interactive notebooks for math, something new I am trying this year. The folders will be for vocabulary words. The baskets hold extra supplies for students like markers, pens, pencils, etc. (Utah doesn't require families to provide supplies for their children, so I like to have extra materials on hand for those kids who don't or can't bring their own stuff.) The shoebox containers now hold my math manipulatives. That was a task and a half getting those things organized!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will be purchasing more things for school, I am just waiting on some extra funds that should arrive next week. I want to buy more pocket folders and composition notebooks, plus whiteboard markers, Post-its, microfiber cloths for the class iPads....the list goes on and on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stay tuned! </div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17665833723133165946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483401690846756069.post-14397507641641152072013-07-24T15:54:00.000-07:002013-07-24T15:54:32.219-07:00Rainbow Shelves!!As you may or may not know, my theme this year is rainbow colors. I'm super pumped! I've never done a theme before. (I've never spent two consecutive years teaching even in the same state! My advice to any first year teachers, don't do a theme. You'll worry about it more than other important things. Your first year is about survival. Just make it to the end alive!!) I don't have a reason behind this theme other than I've always loved the sequence of the colors, it's simple, it's aesthetically pleasing, and with all the basic colors of the rainbow supplied by the school in butcher and construction paper, I decided to get it going.<br />
<br />
Today's post is a combination of three ideas initially found on Pinterest. First I saw this idea two years ago:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjER-jg6lxmauksm-32qhVInTc82_zUByT_XNC1CZvyJYBqIyNLJdBa6brN2LN4YPInlRJjm-XPAn82G146Cy7Am1yW4NeGpL9qm36zgrew23Ew-SENg2WFMuSoYl2QoV_UvhN-NZHwvCA/s400/IMG_2442.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjER-jg6lxmauksm-32qhVInTc82_zUByT_XNC1CZvyJYBqIyNLJdBa6brN2LN4YPInlRJjm-XPAn82G146Cy7Am1yW4NeGpL9qm36zgrew23Ew-SENg2WFMuSoYl2QoV_UvhN-NZHwvCA/s320/IMG_2442.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's from <a href="http://dandelionsdragonflies.blogspot.com/">Dandelions and Dragonflies</a>' blog. She has amazing ideas! I love her use of colors, and I love how she used bookshelves to separate and organize table groups. So starting in January this year, I bought five bookshelves, one each month, from Wal Mart. The cheapo kind that only cost about $17.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, while on a rare perusal on Pinterest <cough, cough>, I found this idea from <a href="http://littlelovelyleaders.blogspot.com/">Little Lovely Leaders</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuMVi2dj6Efzdv9bhLIPgHeqz5LCMlDkOtZUgqnlrXfLmKfae4ATF4jJtVJ0KxfTF_iWbpX1rnqSa8W_Jv3dH8xRH1eJs-n-uiqckZM3TaJECLQ4z0CbRrSWmDRfdSNKhCDmUW8tDUyRmC/s400/DSCN1594.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuMVi2dj6Efzdv9bhLIPgHeqz5LCMlDkOtZUgqnlrXfLmKfae4ATF4jJtVJ0KxfTF_iWbpX1rnqSa8W_Jv3dH8xRH1eJs-n-uiqckZM3TaJECLQ4z0CbRrSWmDRfdSNKhCDmUW8tDUyRmC/s320/DSCN1594.JPG" width="163" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She does a rainbow theme and bookshelves, but what caught my eye were the paper trays on each set of shelves. She says she puts the day's papers into the baskets so when it's time to get paper x out for science or math or whatever, they are already at each group. No more wasting time passing out papers! I have to admit, I'm really excited about that!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I saw these beauties:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/12/4b/80/124b80804efc2b48824b38c356154618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/12/4b/80/124b80804efc2b48824b38c356154618.jpg" width="217" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know where they originally came from, so if you know, please tell me so I can give that person credit! Aren't they lovely? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, combine all the ideas above and what do you get? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCAxgesoeodi6PkNB57Nb23G3onMFivleY4dGTh6wm-lEWi2V17kBhQAbdRJK0RB-7AbMfx55ekiAEQ_jucHgN_9OzLPWLJH8XlLOhrl4clli-fyPB3MbIt7LQa6gGglVAigTalsfoDIE/s1600/IMG_0358.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCAxgesoeodi6PkNB57Nb23G3onMFivleY4dGTh6wm-lEWi2V17kBhQAbdRJK0RB-7AbMfx55ekiAEQ_jucHgN_9OzLPWLJH8XlLOhrl4clli-fyPB3MbIt7LQa6gGglVAigTalsfoDIE/s320/IMG_0358.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yay! I only want five table groups. The school didn't have any purple butcher paper, but I decided purple would be the teacher's color. I'll explain how I made these.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinldJSQlmtQS6aQgKQbwNFOzjgjDU3SkoEY8wZEBfTZxo_HbeKbTcS-9Lwh-ULeb86LbjC9KgzOwRWg-KteNAVV2iUysGipre5-x7g9FRelpciLIltgrUj480qvP6xKdBE7aKqjsY2vH8/s1600/IMG_0349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinldJSQlmtQS6aQgKQbwNFOzjgjDU3SkoEY8wZEBfTZxo_HbeKbTcS-9Lwh-ULeb86LbjC9KgzOwRWg-KteNAVV2iUysGipre5-x7g9FRelpciLIltgrUj480qvP6xKdBE7aKqjsY2vH8/s320/IMG_0349.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The shelves from Wal Mart are only backed with poster board paper, and only one side is black. I stapled the group color onto the side that would be touching the shelves. I lined up and stapled one side at a time cutting off extra as I went along.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktbLys50LFEHsve45wCrZSLwt68djDDt2c6KnVYehJsF3sshzCFN-KDuQynfwd8F9FwdUwzMocpgPE5hf_N5P3-inRUFj_1txhl_aZEq-MnhhV2_efx2zNthbXI5vNb636HlGTWyFBoE/s1600/IMG_0350.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktbLys50LFEHsve45wCrZSLwt68djDDt2c6KnVYehJsF3sshzCFN-KDuQynfwd8F9FwdUwzMocpgPE5hf_N5P3-inRUFj_1txhl_aZEq-MnhhV2_efx2zNthbXI5vNb636HlGTWyFBoE/s320/IMG_0350.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the backing of the first one all finished. It looks orange in the picture, but it's red. It's also very ripply. I don't do perfect, remember?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv7gBJ1r6J6m7JyZJ4_rF7h0cDkKwwUcGBeRb-Hd88um6zcPBrpJewIEIUiJgR7ljFqJxHTzc1boIItixnTp2OAgffYdufToHHQGaHLl_5QQW5JzZb6Sh7Lq4w9tFVixve4eHmOjtaegQ/s1600/IMG_0351.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv7gBJ1r6J6m7JyZJ4_rF7h0cDkKwwUcGBeRb-Hd88um6zcPBrpJewIEIUiJgR7ljFqJxHTzc1boIItixnTp2OAgffYdufToHHQGaHLl_5QQW5JzZb6Sh7Lq4w9tFVixve4eHmOjtaegQ/s320/IMG_0351.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I assembled the shelves.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I nailed the back on and voila!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
View from the back. Now it will look more uniform and not have that nasty off-white color on the back.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I completed the first book shelf, I laid everything else out mass production style and went to town!</div>

Here's another picture. Pay no attention to the binder clip at the bottom of the yellow one. The cheap particle board broke, so I put some Gorilla Glue on the pieces and the binder clip is holding them together until they are dry. And they last one is blue not black. I tried to get a better shot. Oh well!</div>

Yay! The rainbow theme is coming together. I was exhausted today, so this is basically all I accomplished. I was able to clean out my math files, though, so that was good. I hope to get back into the room on Friday for more work! Thanks for reading, and have a great day. :)</div>

Sorry I haven't been posting. I took the weekend off from technology, which is so nice to do sometimes. My room is being cleaned yesterday and today. Yay! And my grandfather is visiting and spoiling the heck out of me. He's so kind. =)<br />
<br />
I thought I'd take a few moments to share with you a letter I wrote to myself about this upcoming school year. It was actually an assignment from the <a href="http://wbtbookclub.blogspot.com/">Whole Brain Teaching Book Club</a>. Like I said before, I highly recommend reading the book, being involved with the study, and WBT in general. This letter asked us to reflect on two of the seven common teaching mistakes and how we are going to avoid those mistakes this school year.<br />

<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: ArialMT;">I know you
were convicted by quite a few of those common teaching mistakes, but let’s zoom
in on the two that made you cringe. I know it hurts, but trust me, you’ll be a
better teacher for addressing these issues.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: ArialMT;">First,
“disorganized teachers breed chaotic classrooms.” Seriously, shoving papers
into cabinets, frantically searching for the lesson plan you spent hours on,
wading through the sea of materials on the horseshoe table, it’s all got to
stop. Not only does it disrupt the flow of your lessons, but it gives your
students permission to disengage. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: ArialMT;">Here are a
few suggestions to help stop the chaos: Label where everything needs to go, and
then put things where they need to be right away. Make an end of the day
routine to follow after the students leave, and follow it. Things to include in
the routine are writing the next day’s learning targets, getting all materials
copied and ready, cleaning your teacher spaces, etc. Meredith, you’re really
great at creating organizational routines, but not so great at following
through with them. These are small, manageable goals that will keep you feeling
confident and keep your challenging students away from “CHALLENGING STUDENT

While I hated it at first, I have come to love it. Why? Every single day you do a little bit of a math concept, and then you repeat it. Every. Single. Day. And it cements in the kids' heads. I became a believer when we got to our fraction unit. I had been dreading equivalencies because, for some reason, it's a difficult concept. HOWEVER, because we did a daily decimal for every day of the school year (day one being 0.01, day two 0.02, adding a hundredth each day), and that daily decimal required a fraction and a percent equivalent, we zoomed right on through that portion of our fraction unit. Sold. I began to embrace and love EDC. You can add things to it, make it your own, put a concept in they are struggling with to review every day, you name it. I really enjoy teaching it now.<br />
<br />
Every month the elements change a little bit. The patterns on the calendar, the fraction of the day, some months we do measurements, some months mean, median, mode, and range, etc. The worst part is setting up the new month's elements. It takes so much time, but then once it's up, you fly through the month. In preparation for this year, I put all the elements for each month into a zippie bag. I sorted, labeled, zipped, and BAM! I'm ready for EDC this year!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the back of the clock. I wrote the month it is used, and I wrote a tip to myself. The book says to cut out clock hands and move them around, but I thought it was easier to just draw them on.</div>

And just in case you were wondering, here is part of August's set up. Those pieces, apart from the month and days, stay up all year. I didn't set anything else up yet because I haven't decided if I'm going to use the wall space or the whiteboard for the rest of the elements. I've seen it both ways. If you use EDC, how do you set it up?</div>

<br />
So I did not come up with this method of border storage. The method came from my master teacher, and I have no clue if it was her own idea or another's. I will say I have seen smarter ways of storing borders, but what can you do if you tossed the plastic baggies they came in? Let me show you the ways....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFN9utYay9vmstZ2v_K6DPzAR2lH6r5bAdvIhTltZRVeGjMJUWMy7VramVrboksYTl5LtcIxgQRofLlUtjNQ29ZLUtJWTJrXf_ziqh-dWCdZSH7QVcs2GZZxWcw2WjoE7e5H8WuUBcBR4/s1600/IMG_0324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFN9utYay9vmstZ2v_K6DPzAR2lH6r5bAdvIhTltZRVeGjMJUWMy7VramVrboksYTl5LtcIxgQRofLlUtjNQ29ZLUtJWTJrXf_ziqh-dWCdZSH7QVcs2GZZxWcw2WjoE7e5H8WuUBcBR4/s320/IMG_0324.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Look at them! All cute in their rolled-up bundles of happiness! (Note: The binder-clipped borders have magnets attached to the back. I didn't want to damage the magnets, so I just clipped them together. That border spent the last two years on my white board segregating the math portion of our day. I haven't decided if I'm going to use it again this year.) Also, my master teacher had TWO of these containers full of borders. I'm okay just having half of a container. I can slowly add more over time. Plus, I rarely switch borders out. This is a good amount for me!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmp1Egyzu_lHSTgUIeMafkX5SCJQQflWuIt8Ppkoeb23Nb-zpTpS047ovR3VsKSxqdFTHYxZNUku3GsS4oUYY62VZC_2a-Cvkl72IwQA-OjM4EfhGLYQT1CFtMVQR3EMywuWFhrHIdI7w/s1600/IMG_0325.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmp1Egyzu_lHSTgUIeMafkX5SCJQQflWuIt8Ppkoeb23Nb-zpTpS047ovR3VsKSxqdFTHYxZNUku3GsS4oUYY62VZC_2a-Cvkl72IwQA-OjM4EfhGLYQT1CFtMVQR3EMywuWFhrHIdI7w/s320/IMG_0325.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know if they're happy, but I am happy that they are not flying all over the place now. Here's how to do it with the least amount of tears possible. I learned from experience if I don't do it this way every time, frustration will ensue.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Edw_i8lwKVVc8o3Glz8Pl-DcOA03QG07uiWNA3IW25KpUNWYdt_PTh3ypGQZ0I_-9ZgQ6ZM5sbwIbRi3Utd0C85hE3p2ccWg9WCGXIO8DU0OgrQdiPhMFqmJhsdlS3J7RVqNA8dEF98/s1600/IMG_0328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Edw_i8lwKVVc8o3Glz8Pl-DcOA03QG07uiWNA3IW25KpUNWYdt_PTh3ypGQZ0I_-9ZgQ6ZM5sbwIbRi3Utd0C85hE3p2ccWg9WCGXIO8DU0OgrQdiPhMFqmJhsdlS3J7RVqNA8dEF98/s320/IMG_0328.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, I sort the border pieces by size.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqk2lqQ5zWBYfLWw7gGQvU0-yS7D2q0PdOzXPyb3QoBmdxwVHRrK92Bu8a4OjokNklY3hQeZng688qfjOD_u9KyRrf7DbPfPs2RNoCjVqonOWF2bEgCaeWJ24Z_LUH9Gw8hfsmjKhSYRw/s1600/IMG_0329.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqk2lqQ5zWBYfLWw7gGQvU0-yS7D2q0PdOzXPyb3QoBmdxwVHRrK92Bu8a4OjokNklY3hQeZng688qfjOD_u9KyRrf7DbPfPs2RNoCjVqonOWF2bEgCaeWJ24Z_LUH9Gw8hfsmjKhSYRw/s320/IMG_0329.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, STARTING WITH THE LONGEST STRIPS FIRST, I roll them together and secure with a rubber band.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilz4e4nZpaRh85XjY5fA_Wbb6m1KDfgJSdvEBLizBMf_pYvBpMi3KTSav1svAJJqk3BC4d_f7wZZ0sN05O7yUG2w2byi2WG5wMngnvxV8_ua0uhwW8RWm77O6tiT-N24v2h4JuLH64oBs/s1600/IMG_0330.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilz4e4nZpaRh85XjY5fA_Wbb6m1KDfgJSdvEBLizBMf_pYvBpMi3KTSav1svAJJqk3BC4d_f7wZZ0sN05O7yUG2w2byi2WG5wMngnvxV8_ua0uhwW8RWm77O6tiT-N24v2h4JuLH64oBs/s320/IMG_0330.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I lay the medium pieces on top of each other, longest on the bottom on up until the smallest piece is on top.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxAvdufMnbIU6BcVYFaLpMUcC39WGiSdTcKjxAwwfZGUqbeVxRBvx0wshhjb-HY9lE3kdthpLbNGCFzatibhnGjw5_zW-vVCYbxAgGP9-sk7KkGVSap8Ij4lnhAeOhqahK_S8GAMNwWo/s1600/IMG_0331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxAvdufMnbIU6BcVYFaLpMUcC39WGiSdTcKjxAwwfZGUqbeVxRBvx0wshhjb-HY9lE3kdthpLbNGCFzatibhnGjw5_zW-vVCYbxAgGP9-sk7KkGVSap8Ij4lnhAeOhqahK_S8GAMNwWo/s320/IMG_0331.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I stuff them into the rolled-up strips.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8YLAxzMvP2zI72CwFi2ilprwWgBJas7pX6ykPO-eFD-5i52sTMVWtUUhTREhmAsHh1vytOaci2pOW63Z0GVPmgullVsksyaru8xJU2zPRdfGyZ2bR0YRi-8IZf_ISoYKbMkX9798xyIg/s1600/IMG_0333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8YLAxzMvP2zI72CwFi2ilprwWgBJas7pX6ykPO-eFD-5i52sTMVWtUUhTREhmAsHh1vytOaci2pOW63Z0GVPmgullVsksyaru8xJU2zPRdfGyZ2bR0YRi-8IZf_ISoYKbMkX9798xyIg/s320/IMG_0333.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, I stick the last two itty-bitty pieces inside. Why save them? As my master teacher says, "You never know when you'll need just that size." She's right!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKVthZN9ohdyI_KV2ELk87xnOe2Ml0ZIY2iQsvnLw45a-VIm9nUZdfa3bYTcZ9j8ZozjjnsJXwAkd6fAX2dviuOmEar5rEwmJRrN5Ewmx9tB4_OgEAlngCOlg1gsFxUEJptBlbcFT30PI/s1600/IMG_0286.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKVthZN9ohdyI_KV2ELk87xnOe2Ml0ZIY2iQsvnLw45a-VIm9nUZdfa3bYTcZ9j8ZozjjnsJXwAkd6fAX2dviuOmEar5rEwmJRrN5Ewmx9tB4_OgEAlngCOlg1gsFxUEJptBlbcFT30PI/s320/IMG_0286.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here you can see the two bulletin boards on either side of my whiteboard.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRN8NSZncjNCere2hSnCKIeFAIQjlWu3L8MwFO_gWYHWjWgRl7i0qo86JAnVFmfrmTzFHePMfe41vv1YbPKhp87UbD5VUqA6y97m7Sef4OaXbIcSiPxSKno5-uN-PqFmvtQrVva2SxdKU/s1600/IMG_0322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRN8NSZncjNCere2hSnCKIeFAIQjlWu3L8MwFO_gWYHWjWgRl7i0qo86JAnVFmfrmTzFHePMfe41vv1YbPKhp87UbD5VUqA6y97m7Sef4OaXbIcSiPxSKno5-uN-PqFmvtQrVva2SxdKU/s320/IMG_0322.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut and stapled a top sheet onto each board. (I never use the top sheets, so when I saw people on Pinterest talking about how they use bedsheets for their boards, I grabbed my unused linens and put them to use!)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYBKAIqt5JRTdpnRuevCLR7uIkuRPU_CLf7lmFTXS6jTmTybEv2f8pUpX3aKRH3PuXCH7nj1lrSMKLHR8EVJq_1suT_nThaYTYiXz8mbDFpJIIg_ib39KgC7Dz9bd8-e9MCBxxPesZUA4/s1600/IMG_0327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYBKAIqt5JRTdpnRuevCLR7uIkuRPU_CLf7lmFTXS6jTmTybEv2f8pUpX3aKRH3PuXCH7nj1lrSMKLHR8EVJq_1suT_nThaYTYiXz8mbDFpJIIg_ib39KgC7Dz9bd8-e9MCBxxPesZUA4/s320/IMG_0327.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Isn't it pretty? It isn't perfect, I know. But like I said earlier, I don't do perfect.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEtHI6BvQhCohPwLN66RUlAfYJ7jsvCfnHyl9Hwf8ZlrIvjD9KQ5sWE8LfWSggtNrKb0PdmyAc8WSAFHhIaB2-voUbwDGFgNIPfengCv0R9qMPPFlS7fI5ihccirHrPuHf69JXh76sjI/s1600/IMG_0326.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEtHI6BvQhCohPwLN66RUlAfYJ7jsvCfnHyl9Hwf8ZlrIvjD9KQ5sWE8LfWSggtNrKb0PdmyAc8WSAFHhIaB2-voUbwDGFgNIPfengCv0R9qMPPFlS7fI5ihccirHrPuHf69JXh76sjI/s320/IMG_0326.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm excited for my rainbow theme! These borders and my rolly-cabinet help add to the colorful atmosphere I want to create.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I also sorted all of my Everyday Counts stuff by month. I'm very excited to have everything all ready to go for each new month of instruction. Stay tuned. I hope to share that organization project tomorrow!</div>
